What Is EXCEL?
The EXCEL Program™ is an award-winning, after school homework assistance and mentorship program designed to support students (Grade One to Grade Six) who struggle with their schoolwork. EXCEL is supervised by Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area and was founded by Mohit Kumar, a dedicated volunteer who continues to work with BGCBigs staff to lead the program.
Volunteer EXCEL Program™ Mentors work with students each week to complete homework assignments, prepare for exams, improve learning skills, improve academic performance, and increase self-confidence. Volunteers support each student’s individual learning needs, and collaborate with teachers to understand the subjects and concepts to focus on with each learner.
Want to Volunteer?
Our team of mentors is a group of dedicated role models and leaders, but we need more! Our volunteers commit to spending time with students Wednesdays during the school year (mid-October to mid-April) from 3:30PM to 4:45PM at McKee Elementary School. Click here to apply to become a mentor! Or click here to learn about our application process.
Our team also strives to educate students on preventative health, teach students valuable life skills, help students further discover their own interests, and provides exposure to career options. Our program also includes leadership opportunities for volunteers! Click here to learn more about the program’s vision.
Since many of our volunteers are post-secondary students, we can be flexible to accommodate your schedule. We also have flexible start and end dates, but we encourage you to volunteer with us for the full program year as our students rely on your commitment to their success! We give time off for university students’ exam weeks in December and April! (Plus U of A students can earn credits!)
