The Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters Lobster Lovers Dinner & Auction was held on November 15, 2013 at the Italian Cultural Centre. This year’s event was our most successful to date and we owe a debt of gratitude to hundreds of businesses and people who are involved with the project who have generously lent their support. Thanks to all those involved this year, Lobster Lovers raised almost $135,000!
Our Lobster Lovers committee worked tirelessly in the months leading up to the event, to make sure it would be successful. This year our committee consisted of 10 members, some of whom brought a fresh eye to the project, and some who have been with us since its inception. These loyal members showed support in so many ways, from recruiting sponsors to dreaming up centerpieces. To the committee, our thanks go out to you; your devotion to the children and youth of our community, and passion for the event will always be remembered and appreciated.

Upon arrival guests were greeted with a glass of wine, from Benjamin Bridge winery and sponsored by Sorrell Financial. The evening began with auction shopping, where our guests could bid on their favourite items, donated by generous individuals and businesses. This year’s auction was one of the best we’ve had and we thank everyone who contributed. Future Shop once again brought out a terrific selection of items, as well as knowledgeable volunteers. Along with the auction, the beginning of the evening also offered a complimentary maritime beer tasting from Pump House Brewery, and sponsored by Fountain Tire.
Our program was kicked off by our MC, Rob Christie and Honorary Chair, Carole Anne Devaney. We extend our appreciation to them both for overseeing an eloquent program. Rob administered an exciting live auction. One of the most memorable moments came when starting the auction with the first item; $1,000 to put a child through the program for a year. Flaman Group of Companies, our event’s title sponsor stopped the auction to offer to match this bid up to $10,000. Within minutes 10 people pledged $1,000 to the agency, and even more discreetly afterwards. There are no words for how humbling this moment was, to see how the cause had touched the hearts of so many generous people.
Edmonton’s Mayor Don Iveson brought greetings from the City and we were thrilled to have him and his lovely wife, Sarah Chan, join us for the evening. Sarah surprised us all by announcing she would like to become a Big Sister too! Another amazing gift.
Guests enjoyed delicious authentic Atlantic lobster, donated once again by Servus Credit Union. The meal was paired with Anvers wine, sponsored by Vinomania.
The most impactful moment of the night was a speech given by former Little Sister Jill. Her moving words about her childhood and her Big Sister touched every person in the audience, and there were few dry eyes in the house. To hear Jill tell the story of her childhood, and the struggles that she faced early on was moving and a testament to her strength of character. It was a privilege to be in the room to hear her speak so candidly about the impact having a Big Sister had on her life.
Our humble and most sincere thanks go out to everyone who was involved even in the smallest way. We could not have achieved an event of this magnitude with anything less than the support we received from you. You could never know each child you have helped or the impact it has made, just as each child in the program could never know all the people that have helped them. The beauty of giving; giving time, giving money, lies in the selflessness of the gift, to give to those you do not know and will never know. We thank you for that gift.
Lobster Lovers 2014 will be announced soon! Look forward to seeing you next year.
