Listening to the Jason Gregor Show on TSN1260 a couple of weeks ago, the boyfriend of one of our Africa Centre Club Staff became inspired. Jason announced that he wanted to help the local community in some way and invited listeners to call or email with potential opportunities.
Ryan and our staffer, Sam, connected with Jason and momentum built for what became an incredibly generous and important gift to our community’s kid.
In her role as Summer Programs Coordinator for Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters, Marissa Bacon knows first-hand, the importance of equipment to engage children and youth in physical activity. Each summer, the Africa Centre Club is home away from home to hundreds of kids in Edmonton’s Northwest corridor. From recreational activities to education, kids have a safe place to be with caring adults that support all aspects of their growth. Like all our Clubs and mentoring programs, we rely on the investment by caring individuals, organizations, foundations and government agencies in order to provide much needed support.
Jason asked what we needed and he would make it happen; Marissa gave him our wish list.
Two weeks ago and again yesterday, Jason himself stopped by the Club with a truckload of brand new sporting equipment for the kids. He brought soccer balls and dodge balls, hockey sticks and goalie sticks, badminton equipment and skipping ropes. He was met with more than a few grateful tears.
Jason and his wife Traci believe strongly in giving back to the community. “Kids being active is very important to us, but even more important is the health of those children.”
While Jason knows his listeners would have been happy to help, he and Traci made the generous decision to do it themselves. “We really enjoyed meeting the kids and getting an opportunity to learn about this amazing program.”
“The Africa Centre has never had a donation of sporting equipment like this before; it’s just unbelievable,” Marissa says with a genuine smile. “Today was a big day for our staff and you can see clearly how excited and grateful our kids are!”
Jason, Traci and son Beckett, were almost at their car when Sam and a couple of our kids came running out. They made a thank you card and wanted to personally express their gratitude with handshakes and hugs and a promise to use this gift well and often.
On behalf of our kids and families at the Africa Center, we’d like to thank Jason and Traci Gregor and an awesome almost staffer, Ryan, for going over and above to provide for our community’s kids.by
