1517515_10152533479692198_6496475040401464251_nOn November 4th, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada and Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada welcomed youth from across the country to the second annual YOUth In Office Day on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Parliament officials hosted two young delegates each, one from each organization, for one day and provided them with workplace experience in politics –  from Parliamentary Assistant, Communications Director, to Policy Advisor, Member of Parliament, Party Leader and Minister.

Our Savanah, a 14 year old Little Sister who has been matched for just over 5 months, was selected to participate on behalf of BGCBigs. Below is a note she wrote following her exciting experience.

My trip to Ottawa was amazing! I was a bit scared of not knowing anyone and that things would be uncomfortable, but the truth is, everyone I met was friendly and I felt at home.

I met so many new friends during this experience, and I intend to keep in touch with them.

The day we spent on parliament hill brought so many surprises, such as my MP John Barlow, who was awesome, and not only that he was down to earth and I found that we have so much in common!

I am usually super shy and quiet, but this trip definitely changed that about me.

The day of shadowing MP John Barlow, I also met his staff who were such lovely girls, who’s names are Pam and Brooke. They took a fellow shadower and myself out to lunch and to their office as well as John Barlows. How cool is that?!

If only I could go back and hang out with all of the MP’s, that would complete the experience to perfection! I got to ask questions and share some opinions, like how the random security checks were a little weird, although for good reasons.

I miss each person I met, and I miss Ottawa itself! Oh, one more thing; we went to visit the war memorial in person which was so sad, but we will remember the soldier that died there the week before this trip, forever in our hearts.

Thanks you so much to Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, and BGCBigs for allowing me to be a part of this trip.

Love Savanah

This was an amazing opportunity for youth to learn about working in a political environment. They also got to see democracy in action—one of the many ways Boys & Girls Clubs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area, along with our National organizations, encourages personal growth, learning and community involvement.
