July 1, 2021 marks the 10 year anniversary of the merger between Boys & Girls Clubs of Edmonton and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton. The leadership of both individual agencies came together to collaborate on benefits of merging as one organization – and determined, quite quickly, that the impact that a merger would have on our community’s children and youth, and the nonprofit sector in Edmonton and across the country, would be substantial. As a result of this first-ever merger in North America, the agency was able to re-invest over half a million dollars in administration costs back into the front-line and serve almost triple the amount of children then either agency had done prior (each agency average serving approximately 1000 children and youth individually, but was able to serve over 5000 youth annually since 2012).
In addition, children who were on the waiting list for a Big Brother or Big Sister in the community now had the opportunity to participate in after-school programming and group mentoring at our club sites. This is just one of the many benefits of this merger over the past 10 years.
