Each year BGCBigs brings together children, families, and volunteers at our Family Picnic to celebrate the start of the summer in a safe, supportive, and fun environment. At exactly 10am on Saturday May 31, the gates to Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch (OLPQ) opened up and busses, cars, and trucks carrying 550 of our BGCBigs family came pouring onto the grounds. Nearly 60 BGCBigs staff were set up at stations, ready to have a great time with kids and their families, club kids, and Big-Little matches.
There were lots of activities to keep people busy. We had a nature walk, petting zoo, and campfire complete with roasting marshmallows. Everyone could go swimming, ride in a canoe or kayak or wagon, and play baseball. Many kids – young and old – wandered around with their faces painted by some of our artistic BGCBigs staff, and they competed against each other in the sack race, bean bag toss, and a mini race through hula hoops and pylons. When the sun got too hot, there were slushes, hot dogs, hamburgers, and a craft table inside. And the lovely staff at OLQP Ranch were at every activity to lend a helping hand.
Over lunch, we were joined by MP Laurie Hawn and MLA Matt Jeneroux and his two daughters. Both men said a few words about the importance of community and ensuring our kids have the tools they need to succeed. Mr. Jeneroux and his daughters then went to explore the petting zoo and see if they could be the ones to finally pet the shy pig.
At one o’clock, the Edmonton Triathlon Academy showed up, put on their wet suites, and raced groups of our kids – they swam and the kids kayaked!
Just in time for the end of the day, the Now! Radio Trucksicle pulled up by the registration desk and handed out two huge coolers of popsicles.
Throughout the entire day, we were incredibly grateful to have 21 TELUS employees helping out with activities as part of their Acts of Caring initiative. Even the Honourable Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Culture, was spotted serving beverages along with the TELUS volunteers!
Though the picnic seemed to come to an end too quickly, everyone had a lovely time enjoying each other’s company, the activities, and the gorgeous weather!
We’d like to thank all our community members who spent the day with us participating in activities, volunteering, or who contributed in other ways to make our Annual Family Picnic another huge success.
