Cooking Up Life Skills with Kid Food Nation and Chef Nation
BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area is thrilled to share the success of our Kid Food Nation (ages 8-12) and Chef Nation (ages 13+) programs! Thanks to the generous support of the Walmart Foundation, these programs have equipped our Club members with invaluable cooking and food literacy skills while fostering teamwork, creativity, and cultural understanding.
Over the past term, these 8-week programs have engaged 204 children and youth across six of our BGC Clubs and Out of School Time (OST) sites. Each session welcomed 8-10 participants for a hands-on exploration of food literacy, guided by culturally relevant and interactive resources. Through group discussions, teamwork, and practical lessons, the participants delved into topics such as:
- Cooking and food safety basics
- Following recipes and honing chef skills
- Preparing healthy, balanced meals
- Practicing mindful eating
- Exploring the origins of food and food science
- Celebrating diverse cultures through food
A Recipe for Success
Kid Food Nation and Chef Nation focused on creating lunch meals that were both simple and exciting. From personal pizzas and rainbow veggie wraps to sushi rolls and DIY tacos, each recipe encouraged active participation and creativity. Sushi rolls were a clear favourite, with kids enjoying the challenge and satisfaction of rolling their own creations.
The group-based structure of the program has been a key ingredient in its success. Kids worked in teams of 6-8, guided by staff and volunteers, which naturally fostered collaboration and peer learning. Older Club youth took on leadership roles, helping younger Club members measure, pour, and assemble meals. This dynamic not only built confidence in the older youth but also created a nurturing and supportive environment for the younger Cub kids.
Building Life Skills Through Food
Beyond the kitchen, the program has empowered participants with essential life skills. From following step-by-step instructions and practicing food safety to cleaning up their workstations, Club members have learned responsibility and gained confidence. These skills will serve them well as they take an active role in meal preparation at home.
The outcomes of Kid Food Nation and Chef Nation speak volumes:
- Children and youth are making healthier food choices.
- They have a deeper appreciation for cultural dishes and practices.
- They are more involved in preparing meals with their families.
Thank You to the Walmart Foundation
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of the Walmart Foundation. Their commitment to fostering food literacy and healthy living has made a tangible difference in the lives of these young participants. On behalf of the children, youth, families, and staff at BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area, we extend our heartfelt thanks for making this program a reality.
As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue empowering young people to develop healthy habits, life skills, and a love for cooking. Programs like Kid Food Nation and Chef Nation are about more than just food—they’re about building confidence, fostering community, and creating opportunities for every child to thrive.
