Building Confidence Through Learning and Exploration

At BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area (BGCBigs), we believe that every young person deserves the chance to explore, grow, and discover their full potential, and through our partnered program, It All Starts with Me, young people get to do exactly that—receive access to hands-on opportunities where they can learn about themselves and the world around them.

This summer, thanks to our partners at the University of Alberta,  Fort Edmonton Park, and the Edmonton Public Library, several of our Club participants had the chance to visit and explore the Botanic Gardens, Fort Edmonton Park and the Stanley A. Milner Library as part of of the It All Starts with Me program, granting these young people access to opportunities they might not otherwise get.

University of Alberta Botanic Gardens

Youth from our Tweddle and West Clubs spent the day immersed in nature, learning about sustainability and teamwork. From exploring diverse plants to trying out outdoor activities, the gardens became a classroom without walls. The trip encouraged curiosity and helped young people see the connection between caring for nature and building stronger communities.

Fort Edmonton Park

History came to life as our Tweddle, West and Rundle Clubs explored the Indigenous Peoples Experience, the fur trade era, and the stories of Edmonton’s past. For many young people, it was a chance to walk through time, see resilience and creativity in action, and reflect on how their own voices can shape the future.

At the library, learning took on new forms through workshops, storytelling, and interactive activities. Youth had the chance to strengthen literacy, creativity, and leadership skills in a supportive and fun setting. The visit showed how learning and mentorship go hand in hand — opening doors to new possibilities.

Why It Matters

The It All Starts with Me program is about giving young people the tools, confidence and mentorship they need to lead their own journeys. These trips weren’t just summer outings; they were stepping stones to building resilience, curiosity and leadership.
