We’re pleased to share that on April 15, 2024, two of our long-time donors, Darrel and Edith Martin from Automated Aquatics, were recognized by the Government of Canada as recipients for the 2024 Canada Volunteer Awards!

For more than 35 years Darrel and Edith have operated Automated Aquatics Canada Inc. in Edmonton and during this time, they have become two of our community’s most generous donors. They’re also beloved community leaders across Alberta, Canada, and internationally. Since 2009, Darrel and Edith have supported BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area (BGCBigs) through an annual donation of $30,000. Together, they always ensure their substantial donation is put towards the highest needs of the organization and we are so grateful for their dedicated support over the years.

Far-reaching impact

Darrel and Edith’s impact goes beyond just Edmonton and Alberta—their philanthropy extends internationally as well. The children, youth and families involved in BGCBigs’ Club programming have benefitted directly from their incredible contributions. Darrel and Edith have also worked directly with the BGCBigs’ leadership team to provide coaching, such as the Kolbe Assessment. Edith has even volunteered with youth at M.E. LaZerte school’s student Interact Club (a student-run organization focusing on leadership skills) which is sponsored by the Rotary Club. Individuals of all ages living with disabilities have also benefited from Darrel and Edith’s support and contributions through Camp He-Ho-Ha.

Together, Darrel and Edith have volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross, Life Saving Society and the Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personal (AARFP). The AARFP is a member-driven, not-for-profit association that trains more than 1,000 facility operators in western Canada. In 1990, Edith served as the president, making her the first female president in the country.

Darrel and Edith are also supporters of Project Amigo, an education program for underprivileged children in rural Mexico that enables disadvantaged and marginalized youth of Suchitlan, Colima, Mexico to achieve their highest potential through educational opportunities, material support and enrichment activities. Edith is the current president of Project Amigo’s Canadian chapter and Darrel has also acted as a president.

Leading the way through actions

Darrel and Edith truly embody the Rotary Club’s principal motto, “service above self”, as they act as exemplary role models within their community. Darrel and Edith use their leadership skills and strategic coaching in their community to mentor young staff at Automated Aquatics, their children and other business leaders. They use their time and resources to generously support organizations who are improving the lives of children, youth and families in any way they can.

We were so pleased that our nomination of them for this award was accepted and a BIG THANK YOU to them for directing their grant award money back to our Agency—this will allow us to run a summer program at Norwood School this year!
