Make This Summer Count: Why BIG Summer Is the Perfect Way to Start Mentoring

Feb 10, 2026

BIG laughs. BIG moments. BIG Summer.

Not everyone can commit to a full year of volunteer mentoring—and that’s okay. That’s why we’re excited to launch BIG Summer, a new pilot mentoring program designed to give volunteers a short-term opportunity to make a BIG impact.

Running from May through August, BIG Summer connects mentors and mentees during one of the most exciting seasons of the year.

What Is BIG Summer?

BIG Summer is a new Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program, offered as a short-term option for new volunteers to try mentoring a young person in our community. Beginning as early as May, mentors will commit to 10-12 visits with their mentee over the summer months, where they’ll participate in no/low-cost activities together.

All it takes to be a good mentor is someone willing to show up, be themselves and make a friend.

At the end of August, mentoring matches will have the option to extend their match if both mentor and mentee are comfortable and willing.

Volunteer applications are now open for BIG Summer.

This Isn’t Your Typical Mentoring Program

BIG Summer is all about maximizing fun and friendship in just a few short months. To encourage connection, mentors and mentees will be provided a shared BIG Summer Passport filled with fun, ready-to-use activity ideas that make it easy to plan engaging experiences while still leaving plenty of room for creativity.

Together, mentors and mentees will check off activities, explore the city and collect memories along the way. It’s the perfect way to experience what mentoring is all about, all in one unforgettable summer.

Why Summer Mentorship Matters

Summer offers unique opportunities for connection. With fewer school pressures, mentors and mentees can explore shared interests, try new activities and build a strong friendship through shared experiences.

At its heart, BIG Summer is about showing up as a caring friend. It’s that simple. From outdoor activities and community events to shared hobbies and conversations, just a few hours a week can spark confidence, connection and joy for your mentee AND you.

The deadline to apply to be a BIG Summer mentor is March 2, 2026.
