Little Moments Make A Big Impact
“As a university student I felt like my life was just beginning so when I was asked to mentor a young boy with some big challenges I reluctantly agreed, not sure what I could offer.
The basketball court felt like safe ground so in our first meeting I brought my ball and we hooped. At first, all that could be heard was the echoing sound of the ball against the hardwood, the backboard, and the rim. That was complimented with some “Nice shot” comments and before too long we were in a full-on conversation. We swapped stories about our families, our cultures, and things we loved to do. I heard myself sharing things I’d never talked about before.
Shoot arounds and games of H-O-R-S-E became our go to activity and revealed a side to my personality I never knew existed and a wisdom I hadn’t known I possessed.”
